The Pheasant Tail Nymph was developed in 1958 by Frank Sawyer, a river keeper on the Hampshire Avon, and tied exclusively with fine copper wire instead of tying thread. This variant with an orange thorax is a later, modern addition for which no single inventor can be named anymore.
The orange thorax makes the fly stand out, making it especially effective in murky water. The Orange Thorax Pheasant Tail is a reliable pattern in both stillwater and rivers and belongs in every well-stocked fly box.
