The Split Wing Dun imitates a freshly hatched mayfly (dun) with characteristically split, upright wings - a classic silhouette shown by numerous mayfly species shortly after emerging. Nothing reliable turns up about a single inventor.

The Split Wing Dun is fished dead-drift during a mayfly hatch and works as a versatile all-purpose imitation when trout are keying in on freshly hatched duns.
