H&L Variant

The H&L Variant was developed in the mid-1950s by American fly tyer R. C. Coffman of Colorado. As the story goes, it got its name because Coffman earned enough from selling the fly to literally buy himself a "house and a lot" - and US President Dwight D. Eisenhower is said to have been among his customers. Characteristic features are the wings and tail of white calf tail hair, along with the partially stripped peacock-quill body.

The white calf-tail wings make the H&L Variant easy to track even in difficult light and at a distance, while the glossy, partially stripped peacock-quill body adds extra trigger appeal. As a versatile attractor pattern, it's fished dead-drift in both fast and calm current and is equally popular with trout and grayling.
