Description

The Beetle Foam is a high-floating beetle imitation (terrestrial) with a body of closed-cell foam. The pattern has no named inventor - foam beetles are the modern, more durable development of the deer-hair Crowe Beetle (John Crowe, "The Book of Trout Lore", 1947) and the older British Coch-y-Bondhu. The foam body does the job the deer hair used to do - buoyancy and a compact silhouette - but survives far more fish.

Like other land insects, trout and grayling take mostly small, dark beetles from the surface drift; in June and July local June bugs and garden chafers can be added to the mix. The compact black silhouette of the Beetle Foam covers that whole range. It is tied barbless and fished dead-drift under bankside trees, overhangs and along weed edges - ideally with a small "plop" on landing that mimics a real beetle crashing in and often triggers an immediate take. Especially good in high summer, once the aquatic hatches taper off.

Fair Trade, Full Circle

Your flies are tied fairly, with the best materials. "Fliegenfischen mit Herz" is building a base for women in Nairobi. The women there own and run the tying workshop themselves, giving them economic independence, pride in their craft, and joy in their customers. Let's work together toward a more balanced world.
