Orange Bitch Creek

The Bitch Creek is a large, rubber-legged stonefly nymph. Its origin is not firmly settled - some sources point to south-west Montana (Madison, Big Hole, Yellowstone), others to eastern Idaho (Henry's Fork, South Fork Snake); it is named after Bitch Creek, a stream on the Idaho-Wyoming line. No designer is recorded. It may have been one of the very first patterns to use rubber legs, now standard on many stonefly nymphs. This version carries an orange body.

The signature features are the two-tone woven chenille body with pronounced segmentation and the rubber-fibre tails and antennae that work constantly in the current. It imitates the nymph of the big salmonfly and is fished weighted, deep on the bottom and dead-drift - classically early in the season around the stonefly hatch, but a reliable mouthful in heavy water at other times too. It is tied barbless; the orange body adds an extra trigger point in coloured or fast water.
