The Woolly Worm is one of the oldest American fly patterns still in use - it's thought to have originated as a bass fly in the Ozarks in the 1920s, with no single inventor recorded. It became known and popular for trout fishing from the late 1930s through Don Martinez of West Yellowstone, Montana, who turned it into one of the best-selling patterns in the American West during the 1950s.
The full-body palmered hackle gives the fly a pulsing life of its own underwater, primarily imitating a large larva or caterpillar, but it works just as well as a pure attractor. This black version with a red tail is fished both retrieved in stillwater and dead-drift in rivers, and is equally popular for trout, bass and rainbow trout. It is tied barbless.
