Black Beetle

The Black Beetle is a compact, black foam beetle imitation. Like most beetle patterns it has no named inventor - it stands in the tradition of robust, compact beetle flies such as the British Coch-y-Bondhu, long fished as a stand-in for a whole range of land insects (beetles, shield bugs, leaf beetles).

Trout take beetles from the drift almost year-round, mostly small dark ones. What matters is less the exact species than a black silhouette sitting low in the film with short leg stubs - which is exactly what the Black Beetle offers. It is tied barbless and fished dead-drift close to the bank under trees and bushes, ideally with a short "plop" on landing. The buoyant foam body keeps it up even in choppy water; in calm margins a slow, motionless presentation is often enough.
