The Killer Bug was developed in the 1930s by Frank Sawyer, river keeper on the Hampshire Avon - originally to cull grayling, then considered a pest on the river. It was named by his friend Lee Wulff. It's traditionally tied from copper wire and the now-legendary Chadwick's 477 wool, production of which ceased in 1965.
Tied barbless, the simple wire-and-wool pattern imitates freshwater shrimp and is fished dead-drift close to the bottom. As the story goes, the Killer Bug was even more effective at culling grayling than netting or electrofishing - today it's a prized pattern for trout and grayling alike.
