The Hare's Ear ranks among the oldest nymph patterns, traceable back to Charles Cotton (1676); the exact authorship of the popular Gold-Ribbed variant is disputed. This version with an orange thorax adds an extra color accent.

The rough-textured hare's-ear dubbing body looks deceptively lifelike thanks to its uneven texture, imitating a wide range of nymphs and scuds. Tied barbless, it remains one of the most popular trout flies and belongs in any well-stocked fly box.
