Kate McLaren

Kate McLaren is a classic Scottish loch-style fly with a densely palmered black hackle - a style often called a "Bumble". As the story goes, Glasgow tackle dealer Robertson devised the pattern in the 1930s for his friend John McLaren, landlord of the Kinlochewe Hotel in the Scottish Highlands, and named it after John's wife, Kate. Originally tied as a sea trout pattern for Loch Maree, it's regarded today as a proven brown trout pattern as well.

Traditionally, the Kate McLaren is fished loch-style as the top dropper ("bob fly") on a team of three, worked just under or even in the surface film - its dense hackle provides buoyancy and movement in the wake. That makes it a reliable choice on stillwater to this day, for sea trout and brown trout alike.
