The Royal Wulff is an American attractor dry fly and a development of the Royal Coachman with hair wings instead of the original feather wings. It emerged around 1929-30 around the Beaverkill Trout Club in New York State - the exact credit is still disputed: it's usually attributed to Lee Wulff, who introduced the sturdier calf-tail wings and a moose-hair tail, though Q. L. Quackenbush was independently working on the same idea.
Thanks to its hair wings, the Royal Wulff floats superbly even on fast, broken water and stays highly visible - ideal for classic attractor presentation on freestone stretches, where it tempts trout and grayling regardless of any specific hatch.
