The Elk Hair Caddis is one of the best-known American caddisfly imitations there is. It was developed in 1957 by Al Troth on Loyalsock Creek in Pennsylvania - Troth himself said he'd actually set out to tie a wet fly, but the pattern floated so well he stuck with it. He drew inspiration in part from G. E. M. Skues' Little Red Sedge. It wasn't published until 1976, and over the following decades became the worldwide standard for caddisfly imitations.
Thanks to its elk-hair wing, the Elk Hair Caddis floats extremely well and is ideal for classic searching-pattern presentation on fast, broken water - fished dead-drift or with a light twitch to imitate emerging or egg-laying caddisflies.
