The Trude is one of the oldest American hair-wing flies and is considered one of the first patterns tied in the characteristic down-wing style. As the story goes, it originated around 1901 when Carter H. Harrison, then mayor of Chicago, was a guest at the A. S. Trude Ranch in Big Springs, Idaho. As a joke, someone tied him a fly from red carpet fibers, fur from a red spaniel, and squirrel tail on an oversized pike hook - and it promptly caught every fish the party could carry. The joke turned into a serious fly with a red wool body, silver ribbing, and red rooster hackle, named after ranch owner Trude.
The Trude is classically fished as an attractor on fast, broken water, dead-drift or with a light twitch - its distinctive, low-hanging hair wing suggests both large insects and small baitfish, making it a versatile choice for trout.
