The Pink Squirrel was developed in the early 2000s by John Bethke of Westby, Wisconsin, aiming not to imitate any specific natural insect but to create a pattern that catches fish almost all the time. It's now one of the most popular flies in the Driftless Area of the American Midwest.
The combination of shaggy hare's-ear dubbing, a gold bead, and sparkly pink dubbing creates a heavy, eye-catching pattern that sinks quickly to the bottom. The Pink Squirrel is fished dead-drift and is successful for trout as well as grayling.
