Little Red Sedge

The Little Red Sedge is a classic English caddisfly imitation, developed in 1921 by the influential fly tyer G. E. M. Skues - a pioneer of imitative nymph fishing. Characteristic features are its dubbed body with palmered hackle and fine gold-wire rib, plus the tent-shaped wing rolled from feather barbs, recreating a caddisfly's typical silhouette. The fly went on to shape later patterns significantly: Al Troth explicitly credited the Little Red Sedge as an inspiration when he developed the Elk Hair Caddis in 1957.

The Little Red Sedge floats excellently even in turbulent pools and riffles - fished classically dead-drift, it's still regarded today as one of the best dry flies for rough, fast-flowing water.
