The Great Red Spent imitates a large, reddish-colored mayfly in the "spent" stage - exhausted after laying its eggs, it lies flat on the water's surface with its wings splayed. Nothing reliable turns up about a single inventor.
The Great Red Spent is fished dead-drift during a spinner fall, when spent mayflies drift motionless on the surface - a targeted imitation for large mayfly species.
