The Goddard Caddis is a British caddisfly imitation, developed by John Goddard and Cliff Henry in the early 1960s to tie a fly that would keep floating reliably even when stripped across broken water. Originally known as the "G & H Sedge", the body was first built from an underlay of seal fur with hollow deer hair spun over it and trimmed into a wing shape. In the late 1960s, American fly tyer Andre Puyans simplified the pattern by dropping the seal fur - under the name "Goddard Caddis" the fly became popular in the US and remains one of the best-known caddisfly imitations to this day.
The bulky, clipped deer-hair body makes the Goddard Caddis extremely buoyant - ideal for stripping across the surface to imitate skittering or egg-laying caddisflies, but also a reliable choice fished dead-drift on broken water.
