Description

The Flying Ant imitates the winged reproductive ants (family Formicidae), which shed their wings after mating and then drift dead or dying on the water - unlike the wingless workers imitated by other ant patterns. No single inventor is recorded for this classic pattern.

During the so-called nuptial flight, neighbouring ant colonies often swarm in sync, so on some summer and late-summer days huge numbers of flying ants fall onto the water and trout hunt them downright selectively - usually in the afternoon. Dead flying ants sit in the film with the abdomen hanging down, held up by the spread wings - exactly the picture the Flying Ant delivers. It is tied barbless and fished on a free drift, in or just under the surface film.

Fair Trade, Full Circle

Your flies are tied fairly, with the best materials. "Fliegenfischen mit Herz" is building a base for women in Nairobi. The women there own and run the tying workshop themselves, giving them economic independence, pride in their craft, and joy in their customers. Let's work together toward a more balanced world.
