Greenwells Glory

Greenwell's Glory is a classic British dry fly (originally tied as a wet fly) devised in 1854 to imitate pale olive mayflies on the Scottish River Tweed. As the story goes, Canon William Greenwell watched a heavy hatch one May day that none of his flies could match. He caught a natural and had renowned fly dresser James Wright tie a matching pattern that same day - the fly was promptly christened "Greenwell's Glory" and has been catching trout successfully for over 150 years since.

Classically, Greenwell's Glory is fished dry and dead-drift on calmer river and stream stretches during a pale olive hatch; the wet-fly version works just as well fished across the current in the traditional wet-fly style.
