The Pheasant Tail Nymph was developed in 1958 by Frank Sawyer, a river keeper on the Hampshire Avon in England, and described in his book "Nymphs and the Trout". Instead of tying thread, Sawyer used only fine copper wire, giving it extra weight and a subtle brightness. The flashback variant with its shiny back is a later, modern addition for which no single inventor can be named anymore.
The Flashback Pheasant Tail imitates mayfly larvae and other aquatic insects in true-to-life coloring, with the shiny flashback adding extra trigger appeal. It's fished dead-drift or with a light strip retrieve and is especially effective in clear rivers when trout are feeding selectively on nymphs.
