The Blood Midge imitates the blood-red midge larva (Chironomidae), whose namesake red color comes from oxygen-carrying hemoglobin in its blood - an adaptation to low-oxygen bottom sediments. No documented origin or inventor can be found for the specific fly pattern itself.
The slim, glossy body in bold red is fished dead-drift or static under an indicator just above the bottom. A classic delicacy that wins over even wary trout and grayling in clear water.
