Big Adams Stimulator

The Stimulator was originally tied around 1980 by Jim Slattery for the Musconetcong River in New Jersey - a further development of older stonefly patterns such as the Improved Sofa Pillow (1940s) and the Yellow-Bellied Mattress Thrasher (1970s). It became widely known above all through angler and fly-shop owner Randall Kaufmann, who featured it in his 1982 Streamborn catalog and later developed his own version. This Big Adams Stimulator is an oversized variant with coloring inspired by the classic Adams.

With its yellow wing body, bushy hackling, and dark tail, it offers excellent visibility and stable flotation even in high or murky water. As a bold attractor pattern, it's fished dead-drift or used as an indicator fly paired with a nymph, and it's especially popular with big, aggressive trout and char.
