Houghton Ruby

The Houghton Ruby is a classic English dry fly from the River Test, developed by William James Lunn in 1917 to imitate the female iron-blue spinner. It was already his second attempt at this natural: his first pattern, "Lunn's Fancy", was superseded by the far more successful Houghton Ruby. The fly is characterized by its broad, splayed wings lying flat on the surface, recreating the spinner's silhouette perfectly as seen from below by a trout.

The Houghton Ruby is classically fished dead-drift during an iron-blue spinner fall, when the spent mayflies lie flat on the water - a proven choice on English chalk streams, but also on calmer river stretches elsewhere.
