The June bug is often underrated in fly fishing. After a winter with little food, no trout is going to let a mouthful like that drift past. When do you fish it? Well - not just in June, but a little before or after too, depending on the weather - the June bugs just have to be flying. Obviously. ;)))

It imitates the June bug (Amphimallon solstitiale), which at a glance looks like a small cockchafer and, in some pre-Alpine valleys with dry meadows and hedgerows, gets into the drift in real numbers through June and July - trout with more than ten beetles in the stomach are no rarity then. Fish the pattern close to the bank under overhanging growth, dead-drift, ideally with a short splashy landing. The buoyant body keeps it up even in moving water; it is tied barbless.
