Grey Fox

The Grey Fox is an American mayfly imitation, developed in the 1930s by entomologist and fly fisherman Preston Jennings for a pale mayfly species on Catskill rivers similar to but smaller and lighter than the March Brown. He adapted the American March Brown pattern by substituting lighter ginger hackle for the darker Rhode Island Red hackle. Art Flick later developed his own hackle-less variant with mixed ginger and grizzly hackle, which he himself preferred over the original.

The Grey Fox is fished dead-drift during the corresponding hatch in late May and early June, and has also proven effective beyond the Catskills for paler, tan-colored mayfly species in the western US.
