Daddy Long-Legs

Dame Juliana Berners already mentioned a fly modeled on the crane fly in her 1496 "Treatyse of Fysshynge wyth an Angle", and it also appears under the name "Harry Long-Legs" in Izaak Walton and Charles Cotton's "The Compleat Angler". The modern tying pattern with its characteristic long, kinked legs is credited to British angler Richard Walker.

The Daddy Long-Legs imitates the terrestrial crane fly, which gets blown onto the water especially on windy late-summer and autumn days. With its long legs, it creates strong ripples on the surface when it lands or is twitched, which draws the attention of big, aggressive trout in particular.
