The Red Tag traces back to a pattern by Martyn Flynn of Worcestershire from around 1850, later known in Yorkshire too via Francis Walbran - named for the characteristic red "tag" at the base of the tail. This CDC Red Tag Nymph Heavy Beaded is a modern, heavily weighted development of the pattern, for which no single inventor can be named.

The heavy bead pulls it down fast, where it's fished close to the bottom, while the red tag acts as a trigger point. Tied barbless, it's a popular pattern that trout find hard to resist.
